The First Taste of Motherhood
05.06.2018

The first time I saw Costa in the delivery room, it was equal parts the most incredible moment of my life and the most terrifying. All of a sudden, I was fully responsible for the survival and development of this tiny human—so fragile and unknowing of the world he now lived in. Being our first born, everything was new and scary. I was often convinced something terrible was going to happen at any moment. Several times, I made Andre wake Costa up in the middle of the night because I thought he wasn’t breathing. But, he was totally fine. As parents, we often feel so much pressure to make sure everything is okay and that we’re doing a good job. In reality, new parents don’t know what the hell they’re doing in the beginning—and that’s normal!

Being a mother is an impossible love. It’s hard to truly put it into words, but it’s certainly easy to understand the meaning of the phrase “wearing your heart on your sleeve” after having a baby. You soon realize that being a mom will be the most challenging thing you ever do in life, and also the most rewarding. It pulls at every inch of you physically, emotionally, mentally, and hopefully pushes you to step up to the plate and become the best version of yourself.
