I have a little sous chef. He is 3-years-old, his name is Costa, and man does he make a mean smoothie. In our house, all things happen in the kitchen. It’s the place where we start our day, where we connect, and where we get to teach Costa about our greatest passion—food. It’s how Andre and I fell in love, and something we both have always wanted to pass onto our children. Not just an appreciation for good food, but an understanding of what goes into making a great meal, the importance of ingredients, and how cooking with love makes everything taste that much better.
I started smoothie time with Costa when he was a little over a year old, and it has been a part of our morning routine ever since. Now that he’s older, we also make scrambled eggs, pancakes, toast, and oatmeal together. I always make sure to give him an important task to complete, like scrambling the eggs or flipping the pancakes. This is important as it helps him establish positive self-awareness. Each day, I watch as his confidence grows in the kitchen and am proud that he has valuable skills that he will continue to develop as he gets older.
Whatever your passion is, there’s nothing more heartwarming than seeing your child’s eyes light up as you teach them about something you love. Whatever Costa does in life, he will at least know how to cook a great meal for himself and the people he loves.
